Simon Calder shares Spain’s beautiful budget destination | Travel News | Travel

Spain is perhaps the UK’s top holiday destination and despite anti-tourist protests in some top hotspots such as Tenerife, millions of Brits are expected to holiday there this year.

Travel expert Simon Calder joined the team at ITV’s This Morning to explain why one beautiful coastal region is the country’s cheapest spot this year.

Looking at Which? Travel research on Europe’s cheapest destinations, Simon said: “The survey came up with the Costa Brava.

“This is where package tourism to the Mediterranean actually started. It was the first place we went to, you couldn’t actually fly in and you had to fly to France and get on a bus.

“This was in the olden days and now it’s just beautiful. So everywhere in the Costa Brava is just lovely coastline, either you’ve got beaches or you’ve got the beautiful coast.”

The Costa Brava is in Spain’s Catalonia region and begins around 60 km northeast of Barcelona and stretches to France.

Top destinations include Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar and Calella de Palafrugell, all coastal towns in the Costa Brava.

Simon added: “You’ve got at Cadaques, that’s where Salvador Dali comes from. And it’s all just all a bit mad and wild. Costa Brava does mean the ‘Wild Coast’.

“You’ve also got the city of Girona, which some people say is actually preferable to Barcelona.”

Girona is known for its medieval history, walled quarter and Roman ruins and it’s much quieter than neighbouring Barcelona.

British tourists can fly to Girona or book a flight to Barcelona with a slightly longer transfer for the Costa Brava.

Which? found the average cost of a holiday to the Costa Brava came in at £952 per person for a seven night break.

Greece was the cheapest destination for a package holiday with the little island of Kalymnos coming out on top.

However, Simon Calder said his top choice in Greece would be Thassos, the second-cheapest destination on the list.
