Storm hits Benidorm as ‘roads become rivers’ and locals don wellies | Europe | Travel

The typically sun-soaked town of Benidorm was transformed on Wednesday (October 23) as the heavens opened and rain poured down.

Local YouTuber ‘Benidorm by Ana’, who shares updates from the holiday hotspot on her channel, uploaded a video showcasing what the town looks like when it rains.

She said they’d had “almost an entire week of rain” in just a few hours, adding: “It is morning time but it certainly looks like evening.”

Ana walked past bar owners “trying their best” to get chairs and tables under cover. “Something tells me all the open air terraces will be quite empty today,” she said.

She showed how pipes were overflowing with rain water, which was in turn pouring out onto the paths and streets.

Some “brave” tourists were spotted wearing t-shirts and shorts – although they perhaps didn’t think to pack a raincoat – while locals including Ana were out and about with wellies and umbrellas. She explained that umbrellas typically cost €5 (£4.16) in local shops, whereas rain coats can be picked up for around €2 (£1.67).

Ana went on: “It is not a typical day in Benidorm whatsoever. This might be a typical day in Scotland, in Ireland, in the UK.” She then walked down to the beach, where there were “barely any people at all”, but was stunned to spot some early risers out for a morning run.

And despite the rain, Ana said it was “not cold at all”. She reassured people heading to Benidorm that there’s still lots to do when the weather turns. She said: “Don’t panic! Even if it is raining you will still have plenty of things to do here in the region. A shopping day, spa and self pampering, inside markets, and why not sports or a lovely walk down any beach area or natural park.”

It also rained hard on Tuesday night (October 22) in Benidorm, as shown by a video shared on TikTok by @benidorm_tiktok_guide.

Filming from the comfort of a sheltered bar, he showcased how the rainwater had formed a “river” flowing down the road. Revellers could still be seen walking past, and he added that “no one seems deterred by it”. And again, he noted that it was still “warm” despite the bad weather.
