The ‘breathtaking’ holiday destination in the world’s happiest country | Travel News | Travel

Planning next year’s holiday? According to new research from the team at Expedia, over half of travellers have booked a holiday after seeing the destination on TV or in a TikTok.

While glamorous spots such as Sicily, featured in The White Lotus season 2, might get most of the attention, there are plenty of other under the radar destinations.

Expedia recommends Tampere, an underrated city in southern Finland, with a unique claim to fame. The city is set to feature in an exciting new film, Svalta, starring British and Irish stars Nick Frost and Aisling Bea.

Tampere holds the title of ‘Sauna Capital of the World’ and with around 60 public saunas in the region, it’s not hard to see why.

Finland has held the title of world’s happiest country for many years in a row and it’s thought the country’s nature and sauna culture plays a strong role.

Tampere used to be the centre of Finnish industry and many of the city’s old industrial buildings have now been converted into restaurants, cafes and museums.

Visit Finland says: “The compact centre makes Tampere great for walking and gives the place a friendly, small-town feel. Outside the old city centre, there are many beautiful districts with scenic views of the surrounding lakes.”

One of Tampere’s top attractions is The Finlayson cotton factory. The former factory building is now packed with cafes, restaurants and shops.

Foodies will love Tampere Market Hall, which stocks local produce ranging from fresh fish to cheese and vegetables.

Of course, it’s impossible to visit Tampere without visiting one of its world-famous saunas and there are plenty to choose from in the Finnish city.

Children will love the Särkänniemi amusement park, which is home to an aquarium, planetarium, art museum and fairytale farm.
